Exceptional Facts & Resources

In 1885, the town of Coronado was founded and bought by E.L Babcock, Hampton L. Story and Jacob Gruendike. Their vision for the town was to create a resort community and in 1886 the Coronado Beach Company was arranged. The Hotel del Coronado was built in 1888 helping the city become a major resort haven. Athletic, boating and baseball clubs were formed and a schoolhouse was built.

In 1900, Tent City was established by John D. Spreckles, a tourist attraction area just south of the Hotel Del Coronado. In the early 1940's the tents turned into cottages and then were torn down.

In 1910, Coronado was connected to San Diego by the Class 1 streetcars. Accompanying the San Diego public transit system that was spurred by the Panama-California Exposition of 1915 and built by John D. Spreckels. The streetcars became a staple of the City until their withdrawal in 1939.
