Coronado Beach

Coronado has a rich history, friendly community atmosphere, white sandy beaches, epic views, and gorgeous homes. The place of never ending intrigue to passersby and residents alike is what helps Coronado attract visitors and homeowners. Tourists have a hard time just walking away from Coronado Island at the end of their vacation. That’s why so many of them end up as residents. Not only is Coronado home to the iconic Hotel Del Coronado since 1887, but the land that it is built upon and that there is anything still standing to this day is an architectural miracle. After Coronado started to get the attention it deserved with the building of ‘The Del’, the U.S. Military seized the opportunity of prime real estate during the early 1900’s and has been the home of the Coronado Naval Base since 1917, and is still in perfect operational condition to this day with its North Island Naval Air Station or the Naval Amphibious Base. With its newly refurbished 21st century amenities and 19th century charm, the Hotel Del Coronado has hosted 11 U.S. Presidents, numerous movie actors and actresses, some of music’s biggest names and has held strong throughout the tests of time while maintaining its prestigious image.

The mellow atmosphere of Coronado picked up some momentum when the car ferry - the original form of transportation between San Diego and Coronado - was put out of business with the architectural miracle of the Coronado Bridge was built in 1969, which connected the active area of downtown San Diego to its inverse neighbor across the bay. The newfound activities were most apparent in Spreckels Park on Orange Avenue, centrally located in Coronado Village. The park’s glory shines most during the holidays and during the summer time when it is the host to various festivities on its central gazebo, playground, and 4 acres of land help to create the perfect “to go” place for visiting families and locals alike. The park was named after Coronado Island’s first proprietor, John D. Spreckels, who fell in love with the Hotel Del Coronado when he first set his eyes upon it. He wanted the world to see it in all of its majesty and even built himself a mansion across the street just so he could gaze upon it whenever he pleased. His way to get everyone to Coronado and enjoy what he then called home, he built “Tent City” as a tourist attraction that would stretch all the way down the Silver Strand with bathing facilities, carnival booths, a dance pavilion, and even a Ferris wheel! If you were to take a drive down the Silver Strand today, you would find the wonderful panoramic view of San Diego and the bay to one side of you and the glistening Pacific Ocean to the other. Along this beautiful strip of land you will find the family homes, condominiums, and townhomes that are all strung along the bayside to create the Coronado Cays. These homes are protected from the noise pollution of the highway by a large brick wall that surrounds the community as well as a guarded entrance and exit. Once passed the fortress of a wall, one can discover the homes, grass fields, and launch ramps that are all throughout the area. Residents of this area can easily get to both the Silver Strand Beach as well as the bay with a simple stroll down the bike path which is located where the historical path of the automotive ferry which is no longer in service. The path leads all the way from the northernmost side of Coronado Bay Bridge all the way down to Imperial Beach.

Neighboring Coronado Cays is Crown Cove, a small bayside area where sailors and kayakers alike can often meet for some down time. It is also the home of the Crown Cove Aquatic Center where homeowners and visitors to the area can go to have kayaking lessons. There are teachers and even day camps where the youth and young children can be trained in sailing and just becoming comfortable with the ocean with the safety of the bay. It is still a wonder how quickly people are able to develop a special kind of love for the water and that this common interest brings people together to create memories that will last a lifetime. This is why Coronado has such a wonderful sense of community, because no matter what area you live in, every resident shares a love for the beach, the water, the atmosphere of simply the weather. Whatever the reason is, the simple pleasure of being surrounded by positive people who love where they live for more than just the view is a contagious feeling on the island. Visitors leave with a sense of relaxation and ease and more often than not, come back for a visit as soon as the weather is nice. But let’s be honest, they don’t call it sunny San Diego for nothing, so the next trip may be sooner than you think!

Having a more southern location than the village puts the Coronado Cays at an advantage during prime beach season. During that time of year the beaches and streets are engulfed in eager beachgoers and food lovers who want to get their fill of the wonders that Coronado has to offer. Being further south down the strand keeps the Cays exclusive and calm during this time of year. The only real way to experience and fully understand the beauty and serenity the Coronado Island offers is to come for a visit firsthand. You will be breath taken by the picturesque scenery and the wonderful ambiance that the island creates as the sun sets toward over the Pacific and hides behind the Point Loma Peninsula to light up the sky with the most beautiful hues of orange and pink. The island offers so much for any type of family or single person looking to experience the living space to remember. Even if it is just for a visit, Coronado’s beaches, Village, and Cays will be waiting for you to arrive.
