The Coronado Ferry

May 27th, 2010

January 8th, 2010

Coronado is such a great place to live and is so steeped in history and tradition. Take for example the Coronado Ferry with it’s first small boat dating back to 1886! It seems that quaint Coronado was “going green” long before green was just a color in vogue! One of the best kept secrets in Coronado is the FREE Commuter Ferry service that is provided by the City of Coronado for residents and Military of San Diego and Coronado. The first ferry out of Coronado leaves at 0615. The three other commuter times are 0715, 0800 and 0835. In order to get your fare free service for the return trip you will need to obtain a commuter ticket from the ferry crew before disembarking. Unfortunately, after January 15, 2010 the San Diego-Coronado Ferry Service will no longer service the Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) ferry landing. The Navy was prompted to end this service in light of security and funding considerations.
Pedestrians and bicyclists board at the Coronado Ferry Landing and disembark at the Broadway Pier in San Diego adjacent to the intersection of Broadway and North Harbor Drive. Tickets can be purchased at the mechanical terminal next to the gangway at the Coronado Ferry Landing or at the San Diego Harbor excusion booth at 1050 North Habor Drive.
For the Coronado to San Diego trip, ferries leave Coronado on the half hour, starting at 0930. The last ferry leaves for San Diego at 9:30 p.m. (10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday).
San Diego to Coronado bound, ferries run on the hour, starting at 0900. The last ferry leaves for Coronado at 9 p.m. (10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Currently a one-way ticket is $3.25 with no extra cost for bicycles. However on January 11, 2010 the fare is being increased to $3.50 per person each way. For additional information you can call 619-234-4111 or 800-442-7847. Or visit http://www.sdhe.com/san-diego-commuter-ferry.html for the commuter ferry schedules.

Coronado has 21 Parks……

May 27th, 2010

January 12th, 2010

A mere two-mile drive from cosmopolitan, downtown San Diego, across one of the world’s most distinctive bridges, is Coronado Island – a world away. Coronado is the quintessential “small-town America” and boasts of 21 parks throughout the city. These parks range from tiny pocket parks to the traditional central square at the heart of the island.
Tidelands Park happens to be my favorite. It is Coronado’s largest park with 22 acres of bayfront land at the base of the Coronado Bridge, at the intersection of Glorietta Blvd and 3rd Street. The park has four ball fields, a playground, a skatepark, a small beach, exercise course, picnic benches, restrooms and plenty of parking. An extensive bike path winds along the water’s edge at the perimeter of the park. I can be seen walking this route everyday with Cassie, my yellow lab. One of the things I love to see is “My Bike” by Amos Robinson. This kinetic sculpture captures the iconic image of a carefree bicyclist cruising along the beach. As the wind blows, the wheels of the bicycle spin and the bike appears to be changing direction. The polished steel surfaces reflect the sky, sea and the flow of life along Tidelands Park. From here, you can enjoy the spectacular view of the Coronado-San Diego Bridge arching across the bay and sailboats bobbing in the anchorage. Rumor has it that Tidelands park sits on land that used to be a Navy housing complex.

Spreckels Park

May 27th, 2010

January 24th, 2010

One of my other favorite parks to go to in Coronado is Spreckels Park. This park is considered the granddaddy of Coronado parks! It was donated by and named after one of Coronado’s city father’s J.D. Spreckels in 1927. Spreckles Park is located in the center of the Village of Coronado, covering eight acres, an entire city block! Prominently displayed in the center of the park is a gazebo. The gazebo acts as center stage for the bands that play during the summer concert series. The Coronado “Concerts in the Park” commence the first Sunday in June and run thru the second Sunday in September. Coronado families can be seen toting their lawn chairs and picnic basket to these events. Another park feature is the swing and playground area. Kids love to go to Spreckels Park and have fun! Coronado is such a safe community that the parents and grandparents can sit back and enjoy the Concert in the Park while the kids are off playing on the swings. Spreckels Park also serves as a great venue for children’s birthday parties! Swings, picnic tables and restrooms! What more could you ask for? Spreckels Park is the focal point in Coronado… it is the hub of activity. The Annual Flower Show, Art-in-the-Park and other community activities are held throughout the year.

Housing data show county’s ups, downs!

May 27th, 2010

Changes in median price are literally all over the map

By Roger Showley, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 1:33 a.m.

“Gerri-Lynn Fives, president of the Coronado Real Estate Association, said she was not surprised to learn that Coronado’s median price was down 21 percent to $995,000 because many owners of second homes were willing to sell at a loss. Unless would-be buyers can make a 20 percent down payment, they usually cannot take advantage of the lower prices.”

Glorietta Bay Park

May 27th, 2010

March 1st, 2010

GLORIETTA BAY PARK, in Coronado California is quietly nestled between the Municipal Pool and Naval Amphibious Base on Strand Way. Glorietta Bay Park is named for Glorietta Bay which borders the eastern side of Coronado and has a harbor that hosts many yachts and boats. It is a little more than two-acres in size. In my opinion, it is one of the most scenic of the 21-parks located on Coronado Island. If you are into boating like I am, it is good to know that the park has a free launch ramp where jet skis, sailboats and other small ocean vehicles can be launched. It offers free parking for your vehicle as well as your boat trailer. The Pacific Ocean is directly accessible (by car or foot) just a few blocks away on this narrow stretch of land. Glorietta Bay Park offers facilities such as restrooms, picnic tables, kids playgrounds and huge grass lawns for children to romp and play. For the perfect lunch, pack up a picnic basket and sit in the sun or the shade if you prefer, overlooking the expansive bay and Coronado Bay Bridge, a huge, sweeping structure that connects San Diego mainland to Coronado Island. Vacationers love to sit and watch the boats sail through the bay, gaze at the beautiful San Diego skyline seen from the park and look at the towering bridge. Scenic Glorietta Bay Park was the perfect setting one year for my family’s annual photo. Not far from the park you can see the Hotel del Coronado and downtown shops. There’s a public bus that stops near the park so you can access it easily without a long walk from most destinations. Like most beaches and parks in Coronado, the park and adjoining beach facilities are available for groups of up to 100 people, by permit. Contact the city for more information. http://www.coronado.ca.us

Considering the purchase of Foreclosure property in Coronado or San Diego County?

May 14th, 2010

April 29th, 2010

Considering the purchase of Foreclosure property?

Here are some steps to follow to help you achieve your goal.

The market is being bombarded weekly with new Foreclosures in every area in the USA. How can you find them? Simple, call Gerri-Lynn Fives, Coronado Homes for Sale and ask her to send you daily listings that meet your criteria, don’t be vague, be as detailed as possible and within a realistic price range. In other words if you qualify for a $100,000 loan don’t focus on $ 1,000,000 homes, odds are you will never get an offer accepted and if you did we are talking about hundreds of offers. That takes time and energy.

Once you start receiving the list contact Gerri-Lynn Fives, Coronado Homes for Sale, why? Because you will need a lot of hand holding and you are looking for an advocate, someone that will go the extra mile. Every property you like, you will need Market Reports CMA’s, information, etc. In addition you will need to be looking at property weekly with your agent. It is important for both of you to see eye to eye. Remember you are looking for the diamond in the rough and believe me they are out there you just have to look.

Gerri-Lynn Fives, Coronado Homes for Sale will help you put together a well packaged offer. Make sure you provide the pre-qualified letter, proof of funds, etc. The better you look on paper the easier it will be. If you can close in 10 days, put it in the contract. Every detail helps the bank decide in your favor.

Sunset Park

March 1st, 2010

March 1st, 2010

Sunset Park in Coronado is located at the north end of Ocean Boulevard, just before you get to Gate 5 of North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado. This three-acre patch of grass was a gift to Coronado by the Spreckels Family. It is a popular park where most organized youth soccer games take place. It also has a small playground at the north end. This grassy park is lined by big houses on one side and the beach on the other, with a great view of Navy planes flying in to land at North Island. Some of the best sunset views can be seen from here, hence the name Sunset Park
